Rebuilding Flowerdale
Green Cross Australia's US affiliate Global Green USA is leading a massive rebuilding green initiative in New Orleans, post Hurricane Katrina.
Another inspiring community-lead green rebuilding initiative is underway in tornado devastated Greensburg, Kansas.
We want to take a page out of their book.
Green Cross Australia has a big vision to support Victorian bushfire communities as intensive rebuilding begins.
Typical Australian households currently produce around 14 tonnes of CO2 - more than just about anywhere else in the world.
We want new homes, schools and buildings in Victoria to become part of the greenhouse solution by reducing their future emissions through great design, materials, appliances and renewable energy sources.
Like never before, Australia’s politicians, businesses and communities have given generously and committed to a major rebuilding effort in response to Black Saturday.
Flowerdale is an inspiring example of a Victorian community pulling together to rebuild their lives, homes, community centres and schools in a more sustainable way.
Follow their journey through emergency relief and recovery to eistablishing temporary housing while they build the community back green on the HelpFlowerdaleNow Blogspot and fantastic Flickr photostream.
'Build it back green'
Green Cross Australia is partnering with the Green Building Council of Australia, the Australian Conservation Foundation, Alternative Technology Association, Habitat for Humanity Australia and the Flowerdale community leaders in this effort.
We are developing a major proposal suggesting a whole-of-government Victorian effort to support sustainable reconstruction of bushfire affected communities - with a hub in Flowerdale.
Investing in community tools for green rebuilding will catalyse significant private sector investment which showcases Australia's green building excellence.
This initiative will build vital intellectual property with business and community partners.
This IP will be redeployed around Australia, and the world, as communities respond to extreme weather disasters ahead.
Green Cross Australia and its partners want Victorian bushfire communities to have access to:
Fantastic web tools for home builders, architects and builders, including installation videos, tip sheets, extensive product guides and information about available Federal, State and local government rebates and discounts.
Community green building resource centres with up to date sustainable product and vendor information, samples of environmentally friendly building materials, and advice on how to access professional one-on-one green building consultations by appointment
Regular information meetings and workshops coordinated through community centres and clubs in bushfire affected communities.
