State Cadet First Aid Competitions This Sunday!

Hi Guys!

This Sunday (1/11/2009) is the State First Aid Cadet Competitions! The competitions involve the finalists from North/country and South following the Regional Competitions held earlier this year.

There are categories in Cadet Leader, Cadet Individual, Cadet Team, Junior Individual and Junior Team.

The day consists of a "First Aid Scenario", which involves the cadets competiting against each other to perform the most efficient first aid skills in order to provide the best care for casualties. The scenario could be anything from a mock car accident, to a first aid post, or even a mock explosion! The cadets are kept in isolation until they are called to their piece and when they arrive they are met with people acting as real casualities, with "real" injuries! They are marked on everything including control of the situation, danger removal, calling for help, team work, use of helpful bystanders, and of course, first aid skills.

They cadets also have to participate in a non-first aid piece which could involve anything from teaching a skill to a group, problem solving, or media releases.

The cadets train for weeks perfecting their first aid skills and situation control. The day is full of nerves, excitement and relief when its all over! These competitons are held Australia wide and the best from each State or Territory come together at the National Cadet Competitions each year.

The adult first aiders also participate in first aid competitions but there is only a Adult Indiviudal, Adult Team, and Manager component. These competitions are held earlier in the year and the National Competitons are held alongside the National Conference each year.

By competing in First Aid Competitions, we are able to not only perfect our first aid skills through many training sessions, but also our control of mass casualty skills, and also the ability to work in high pressure situations.

When I first joined St John, I was asked to compete the very same year! Let me tell you, competing is one way to learn you first aid skills quickly!

We feel at our division that it helps the cadets to learn their skills and be confident with them in a short space of time. It also teaches the cadets to be confident when treating casualties and keeping them calm. That's why we feel it is important to encourage inter-divisional competitions to keep the cadets up-to-date with their skills.

Here are some photos taken of the Western Australians (including me!) competing in the team event at the National Adult Competitions held on the Gold Coast June 2009. We were presented with a plane crash that had occurred on Stradbroke Island (aka the marquee on the grounds of the Gold Coast Casino Complex). The photos show team work and the use of a bystander.

Well, that's all for the moment but I will be posting another blog post-competitions to give you all the run-down of what the cadets were presented with, the results, and hopefully some photos and video footage!

Take care,

Zoe xx
