Well hello everyone!
Just thought I'd post a blog that you're all expecting about the Storm that occurred on the 22/3/2010 at around 4.00pm in the afternoon.
Whilst I was at work on a late shift, most people were actually on there way home when the storm hit, throwing the city in to chaos. The storm definitely picked a time to hit that's for sure! Peak hour in Perth is bad enough, but to have a storm that size hit at the same time was just incredible.
On the 5th floor of the hospital, I had a great view of the storm as it came through Perth, although I was not aware of the extent of the damage until I tried to drive home later that night around 9.30pm.
The flooding was extensive as most low lying areas were not safe to drive through. Trees were strewn across the road and an alarming number of ceilings collapsed! My hospital experienced ceiling collapses and also lots of roof leaks which then put the hospital on a Code Yellow- Internal Emergency.
We had lots of injuries come through the Emergency Department, mostly from car accidents and ceiling cave-in's. The SES and FESA were very busy-to say the least.
The clean-up is on going but the good thing is there were no fatalities.
Friends in New Zealand said that Perth's storm headlined their news bulletin!
The crazy thing was, earlier that day, it was hot! Then later on that night there was no sign of what had happened just a few hours earlier.
Thinking of my car sitting on the roof of the hospital’s multi storey car park, I was anxiously waiting to see what I would find when I returned to my car. I had heard stories of windscreens being smashed and cars being dented but miraculously, all that happened to my car was a bloody good clean!
Driving my newly cleaned car home, I was sent on a detour as the route I normally took was closed, then I realised how bad the storm really was!
Today, it is hot again, and just a reminder that anything can happen! You can never be too prepared for the wild weather we have been experiencing of late. It just comes out of nowhere!
Lets hope that was the worst we'll see in a while!
Zoe xx
