To start off - my time away at Kingaroy was great. I worked with such a great team while I was away. To begin with we were there to take over from the tired local crews.
We were waiting for the fire to come to us as it wasn’t in an area we could access. But in the end the 1st officer and I ended up stopping a fire the size of half a basket ball field with a gum tree branch.
We were impressed. Then we mopped up for the rest off the time and ended coming home late that night.
Three days after that I ended going back out on another task force for four days. While we were there we did the same thing, sit and wait but while we were waiting we had a couple of games of cricket which was great. We met some great people. Then it started. The fire came up so quick we didn’t have time to put a back burn in.
We just had to try and put it out. It was really intense especially when we had lack of water supply to start with but then we finally got to start back burning and we did a 6 km back burn in 1 ½ hrs between 5 trucks. I thought this was really cool and then the next day we ended up using the fixed wing bombers out there and back burning another 2 kms before we all left on the Friday. You know the best thing was – everyone worked together as a team. So that was it for Kingaroy, now it’s on to Townsville.
