Just a quick blog to say I have been really busy preparing for a major group back burn which will be happening around June. There are six trucks and the crew I work with is awesome. I am really liking working with The Burns Team and I don't really want it to finish! »

Hi my name is Stephen, I’m 22 years old and live on the Gold Coast in Queensland. Since I was little, I have always wanted to be a firefighter, so when I turned 16 I joined the Queensland Rural Fire Service. Six years on and I am still in the Service and enjoy it just as much now as when I joined. I am extremely proud to be a Rural Firefighter and I am also proud to be one of the new Extreme Weather Heroes. I am looking forward to being part of a team that encourages volunteering and promotes the importance of taking care of our planet. »

Well all 16 of us left on the Thursday from Brisbane airport which was fun. If we didn’t know each other before then – we certainly did afterwards. When we arrived at Townsville airport we were greeted then we went back to the hotel and we had a small talk of what had been happening before we had arrived. Then the next day we went to the fire station where we were getting our trucks and ourselves organized. »

To start off - my time away at Kingaroy was great. I worked with such a great team while I was away. To begin with we were there to take over from the tired local crews. We were waiting for the fire to come to us as it wasn’t in an area we could access. But in the end the 1st officer and I ended up stopping a fire the size of half a basket ball field with a gum tree branch. We were impressed. Then we mopped up for the rest off the time and ended coming home late that night. »
