Climate change + hockey + Bundaberg SES Facebook closure

Sunday 25th April 2010

I have two people comment that i urgently need to update my blog....to be honest i didn't think anyone would find interest in my weekly/monthly/bimonthly rantings on my EWH blog. So here is my April instalment.

There have been a few things that have sparked my interest since my last blog in...yes...Jan!

1. Climate change is ruining my hockey! Check out my flip video of the recent downpour in Yarraville.

Take 1- The first round

Take 2- Second round (hockey players are determined, so a break in rain & they are out on the field....but as you can see this did not last long!)

It may SEEM harmless, however this is the FIRST time ever in the time i have been playing hockey (9yrs) that training has been cancelled due to heavy rain & thunderstorm activity. Now surely....this cannot be coincidence? Read in the press recently that we have had the hottest days on record?

2. Ruby loses it.....

I am absolutely stunned that even people younger then me think that climate change is a load of bull & use that as an excuse to avoid recycling or doing anything that results in saving energy! Aren't Gen Y's meant to be concerned about the future......? or did i read that in a trashy magazine?

Hey maybe you don't agree with climate change, but don't use that as an excuse for not wanting to recycle. Get off your high horse & do some reading!!!!!

OK....to slightly go off the subject...look at Footscray Unit's 3 newly trained Crew Leaders!!!!! ***Woop Woop***

Andrew Martin, Nick Tait & David Dhu

3. Bundaberg SES Facebook group closes down due to privacy issues

What the? I was reading through my messages & i came across a message from a member at Bundaberg SES who stated that he apologises but the site had to be closed as he had breached EMQ policies & procedures regarding privacy. Even though the Bundaberg SES member stated that he was at fault as he did not seek approval to open the page, this in my opinion is quite sad to read.

Facebook as we know does have some CONS for ANY organisation in terms of privacy, but until recently i didn't realise how the connection & communication on FB between SES Units all over the country are shaping the way Unit members & regional staff are disseminating information not just to their members but potential volunteers. It has also been a fantastic medium for sharing ideas & friendships that would otherwise not exist without a deployment interstate or a training course.

I am extremely proud to report that VICSES is developing a policy that outlines how Units & SES members can use Facebook without jeopardising privacy policies & procedures. In contrast to Bundaberg SES, VICSES Units (as far as i am aware) have not been told to shutdown their accounts even though the policy is still yet to be drafted & released by VICSES.

Organisations need to move quickly & adapt. Even through SES is a not- for - profit organisation they still need to maintain a competitive edge, and Facebook is just one way SES can do this.

YOU CANT CONTROL THE INTERNET....EMBRACE IT & USE IT TO YOUR ADVANTAGE!

Action?

Visit http://www.emergency.qld.gov.au/emq/info/contact.asp NOW & express your concern over the closure of Bundaberg SES Facebook page.

That's it from me for now.

Be sure to check out my next blog re: Emergency Services Foundation Scholarship info night AND.... that i have been asked to do a presentation for the next Emergency Management Foundation Conference in July 2010.

Ciao x

I agree about the networking that is springing up on line and twitter etc ! what an awesome thing to see , units are crossing states , regions and friendships are sprining up all over the place ! Facebook itself has in the last month exploded with groups and new unit pages let alone friends on personal pages. This should be encouraged, we know we have guidlines to follow and respect that, but I for one and others feel the same, units should be encouraged to join a growing network , voice opinions , meet other people and grow , not be smothered and muted ! Lets see this networking grow ! on that point, a heartfelt thank you too all those people who have kept their pages going, added people from across Australia and indeed from across the world, its fantastic and so worthwhile...Ruby and others , your doing an awesome job!!!
