So, the first night back to training for the leadership group...that is we had a meeting which was my opportunity to discuss the Extreme Weather Heroes and what they mean. It was embraced and was taken to be a great opportunity to spread the word that extreme weather events are linked to climate change.
Today I sat at my desk...feeling & seeing the extreme gusts of wind rip branches and throw them all over the road, I wondered 'what do people in the Maribyrnong & Melbourne community think causes these sudden bursts of wind?' My pager going off twice (more then once is a big deal!) Trees coming down in our response area....I was a tad upset that I didn’t have my camera handy to show you some video images and photos of the small branch that hit me in the head! My brother thought it was quite funny! So instead.... the photo below is one of the members at the Unit (Peter Prodromos)...we happened to find a Superman windscreen protector very close to where we were standing....weird? no... it was a sign.
Interesting side note- During last year the experienced the most number of trees falling over in residential streets on days which experience very little gusts of wind. Members are sometimes speechless when they see a job come through on their pager to say that we have a tree job, on a nice sunny day! My next task is to let ALL the members at the Unit know about the Extreme Weather Heroes...and then spread the word to ALL members at VICSES!
A large bush fire in Carrum Downs has burnt down 5 hectares of land...not sure how it started....another scorcher tomorrow with a temp of 29 degrees. Thank goodness the wind has died down dramatically!! I hope all those residents had an emergency plan!!! No matter where you live, even in a highly urbanised enviro...you need a PLAN!!!!
Just listen to The Emergency song by The Herd...... and look at all those images on the www.greencrossaustralia.org website!!!! From the mouth of one of the greatest leadership facilitators I have had (Matt Jennings)....'you just can’t make that stuff up!!'
