Hey there again!
The Footscray Unit was supposed to experience this type of weather & number of jobs in early Dec 08, according to our stats!
Every year in Dec the Unit is put on high alert for calls of assistance from the Maribyrnong & Melbourne communities. BUT this year has broken the 5 year cycle (stats have only been done for the last 5yrs!)....making a link between climate change and extreme weather events I dare say.....
Take a look at a what I mean:
This gumtree was uprooted during todays winds being experienced in Footscray....but no doubt there are many other jobs like this being experienced by other VICSES Units in the state.
As you will see from my previous post, high winds on Thursday.... slightly calmer on Friday.... and today there is just enough wind to cause large trees to become completely uprooted. A very common occurence over the past year, but definitely not something I had seen 4 yrs previous.
There is a direct link between climate change and these freak weather occurances, just look at the freak storm event we had in April 08 (2/4/08- 6/4/08)! The Unit had over 20 jobs, with VICSES receiving over 5250 calls.
VICSES Media Release- Operational statistics taken at 5th April 08 1730hrs (taken from www.ses.vic.gov.au site). These stats are representative of the requests for assistance that VICSES units have received since the operation began on the 2nd April 08.
VICSES Media Release- Complete outstanding tasks at 6th April 08 1600hrs (taken from www.ses.vic.gov.au site). These stats are the overall number of requests of assistance received by VICSES from 2nd April 08 - 6th April 08.
We have not expected weather like that in the month of April before (as long as I have been operational at least). The freak weather occurances are predicted to keep occuring as long as we experience climate change.
Take a look at the Extreme Weather Heroes home page.... 'Scientists predict more floods, fires and storms as the planet warms, and Australia’s emergency management system relies on volunteers when extreme weather events hit our neighbourhoods'.
Becoming a volunteer is an awesome way to help during these times....but quietly, also a great way to get out of the house!!! Yay!!!
