Things to ponder

Sunday 12th April 2009

Happy Easter all. Even though i don't celebrate i will like to take full advantage of the Christian public holidays.

So i had some time off from SES to ponder issues and enviro concerns of course. Most importantly i used the time to read up on some trashy mags. Its a once a year occasion for me and it was well worth it. Trashy mags are now actually commenting on enviro concerns, which was NEVER the case 2 years ago. You were lucky to even have a recycle symbol in very small print on the mag. One article that really caught my eye was an article in Cleo Magazine. Unfortunately i left the magazine at a mates place, so there will be no literature review...but here is what i remember.

Apparently there is a 'condition' (cant remember what its called) but its where people take the 'green' concept abit too far. Such things include:

- buying only recycled clothing, including underwear (yuk!)

- Going to the toilet in the garden to save a flush

So i will concentrate on those 2 points for now (until i can get my hands on that mag). Are you one of those people who follows any of the above points? It would be interesting to know the age range of these people who apparently have this 'condition'. I have noticed more and more that young people are challenged by efforts, such as 'Going Green'. If people want to use recycled underwear (at the risk of social detachment & alienation) then let them! Good on them for leading the way & acting in a way that isn't going to harm ANYONE. Why are actions that are a slight divert from what the world considers to be the norm, have to be called a syndrome/condition? On the other hand a friend of mine told me awhile ago that she went to a wedding in QLD, and while there met this woman who only eats fruit that has fallen from a tree (again, an usual name). This seems harmless & some people may say that her actions are great for the enviro...no transport, chemicals or labour required. HOWEVER, she has a child who is 12, who is extremely underdeveloped & looks like they may be suffering from rickets. When he was younger he broke his hip because his bones were extremely fragile due to his diet! This is where your actions are harming others. Her son has poor health due to her belief in eating fruit directly from a tree. Is this right?

I went to Laverton Market (Trash & Treasure) a few weeks back to buy a 2nd hand cabinet for the Unit. I still cannot bring myself to be in a positive mood in these markets. Yes, they sell some fabulous timeless pieces & shoes that your mother still wears, but how many things do we create that end up in a rubbish pile when we could just generate materials on demand rather then by the millions! Trash & Treasures are great that they are actually trying to sell these old pieces rather then encouraging new materials to be made, but it really is depressing to see the amount of waste we have. Have you driven past a Salvo's shop lately? Note to self: take a photo & post it. I will say no more, until i get a photo.

I have started a project to try and reuse as much material items as possible. A fellow volunteer at my Unit said that they have started using alot more paper since the introduction of VISY recycling boxes in workplaces. Why would you use more paper then before????? Because previous to these VISY recycling boxes existing, people actually did use the other side of paper! Have some of our 'going green' actions caused us to go backwards? We so easily say 'put that in the recycle bin', what happened to REUSE, before RECYCLE?

Funny video that i came across on YouTube.

So what does this have to do with Extreme Weather? More materials produced, more pollution created from factories, more landfills, more more more....

If only i had the time to create some quirky video material for ya, or even be as tech savvy as some Gen Y members. Sometimes i just don't consider myself a typical Gen Y....speaking about Gen Y there was a column in Cleo again, titled 'Enough with the Gen Y bashing already'. I am interested to know what people think about this. But i will leave this for my next blog.....

For now check out the following video (bit long but quite informative).

To be continued....

No mention on dumpster diving as part of this 'condition'??? One of my personal favourites.
