Things are finally starting to get back to normal around here with the easing of the fires in Victoria.
The ACT sent 6 task forces in total to the fires each comprising of about 100npeople from the ACT RFS, Fire Brigade, SES, Paramedics and mapping experts.
I was due to leave for Victoria last Wednesday for the 7th deployment from the ACT and my 2nd in less than a month but we were called on Tuesday night to say we were no longer needed and that would end the ACT's commitment to the Vic fires.
My experience at the fires and the experience of most was good. there was tragically an incident that resulted in the death of an ACT fire brigade member. this brought home the dangers that can be faced when we do the kind of job we do but everyone who does this job knows and accepts these risks. the risks are something you have to consider if you are thinking of volunteering to do this kind of thing but if you can recognise and accept these risks then not much else will stop you.
i'm not trying to discourage anyone from volunteering rather i'm trying to do the opposite but people need to be aware of what they are getting into and each volunteer agency will most likely make that known to potential volunteers.
On a better note the weather is starting to cool down here with mid 20's forcast for the next week. there were a couple of small grass fires around the ACT recently but nothing that caused great concern. A fire started on saturday afternoon to the north west of the ACT border near Wee Jasper. this area was near the area where the 2003 fires that hit canberra started. the NSW RFS got the fire compleatly out in about a day at a size of 61 ha.
