I have returned to the ACT from my deployment to the Victorian bushfires. we were deployed to Beechworth in N/E Victoria for 3 days on the fireline.
It was the usual mix of hard work and sitting around.
We performed various roles from constructiong and consolidating containment lines, mopping up and blacking out, and back burning.
Fires of this scale and in that sort of terrain are difficult because in many cases direct attack is not possible.
Back burning operations are the main method of containment and these usually occur between a track or bulldozer trail and the main fire.
The ACT has so far sent over 300 paid and volunteer personel from the ACT RFS, fire brigade and SES.
This has been over three task forces and a few Remote Area Fire Teams.
The deployment was a great experience and it feels god to make even a little difference. pictures and videos will be up soon on YouTube and Flickr.
