Well it has been a bit of a busy end to 2009.
There have been a number of small (and often delibratly lit) fires around town.
The Remote Area Fire Team (RAFT) that our brigade has, and I coordinate, sent 5 members to a fire in the mountains in the west of the ACT a couple of weeks ago to contain a fire overnight with handtools.
There are two other brigades in the ACT that have RAFT crews (one volunteer and one parks).
10 guys from these two crews were sent to The Blue Mountains about 3 weeks ago for a three day deployment.
I was sent as Crew Leader as a part of the second RAFT deployment to The Blue Mountains about 2 weeks ago.
We flew out of Canberra on the Friday afternoon to Richmond RAAF base.
The fire we were tasked to was in very remote country and was about 2000 hectares.
Because of the remote and very steep and rugged country the fire was in we were flown in and out each day by helicopter.
The members of the crew worked very well in tough conditions from hot temps and 90km winds to thunderstorms with lightning strikes less than a km away from us.
Photos will be put up soon.
The ACT RFS has sent a 32 man crew to Armidale to assist the NSW RFS who have a large number of fires burning across the state.
A second deployment is leaving tomorrow morning to replace the first crew.
