Busy start to season

Well it has been a bit of a busy end to 2009 - and a busy start the the fire season. From The Blue Mountains to Richmond to Armidale, from small local grass fires to remote helicopter access - I know that this summer is going to be a big one. »

Well it has been quite a while since I last wrote a blog. The end of the bushfire season tends to come as a relief to most people. This also brings some welcome down time which resulted in me going no where near the bushfire shed for over a month, doing no courses or hazard reduction burns and therefore having nothing to blog about. Now we find ourselves only a few months out from the next bushfire season (seems like the last just ended) which means there are new members going out too the various brigades around Canberra. »

Cooling Down...

Things are finally starting to get back to normal around here with the easing of the fires in Victoria. The ACT sent 6 task forces in total to the fires each comprising of about 100npeople from the ACT RFS, Fire Brigade, SES, Paramedics and mapping experts. I was due to leave for Victoria last Wednesday for the 7th deployment from the ACT and my 2nd in less than a month but we were called on Tuesday night to say we were no longer needed and that would end the ACT's commitment to the Vic fires. »

Back from the Victorian Fires

I have returned to the ACT from my deployment to the Victorian bushfires. we were deployed to Beechworth in N/E Victoria for 3 days on the fireline. It was the usual mix of hard work and sitting around. We performed various roles from constructing and consolidating containment lines, mopping up and blacking out, and back burning. Fires of this scale and in that sort of terrain are difficult because in many cases direct attack is not possible. »

Hot Conditions

Well it has been a very hot week here in Canberra with two Red (extreme fire danger) days to end the week. I attended two small fires this week. None of this really seems important when you look at the absolute devastation and loss of life in Victoria. The ACT last night sent 90 firefighters to Victoria and there is a chance that a second deployment later in the week. »

Finally I have some time to get my arse into gear with the Extreme Weather Heroes campaign! thank god for or aus day long weekend. Well what can I say? I've been super busy since the great EWH briefing weekend at the Gold Coast. I went back to work for one day then I was off to just near Bundanoon in NSW for a three day deployment for a RAFT (remote area fire team) fire. »

Exhausted from the Extreme Weather Heroes Briefing Weekend, but extreme weather stops for no one! I am now in the depths of burning Canberra bushfires - and while I have wanted to be a firefighter since I was four - and have been volunteering since I was 16, I still get that adrenalin rush! »
