Emergency Management

Tis been a while since my last blog and this update is about my experience during some Emergency Management training.

Last Tuesday I participated in the Emergency Managements Arrangements course. It is the first in a series of short courses which leads up to an Emergency Management certificate. The course is run by the NSW Police Force through Emergency Management Australia, Emergency Management NSW and was held at the Salvation Army HQ.

The course was really just an introduction into the way the various agencies in NSW work together during times of emergencies. These agencies include Red Cross, Police, SES, the hospitals etc. Whilst it was a very high level course, which most volunteers don’t really need to know to do their every day job such as tarping roofs, cutting down trees, manning phones, doing outreach etc., it was nevertheless an excellent overview course as to how we all play our part during times of disaster. Emergency management was recognized as a requirement many years ago by the government after several agencies, whilst good intentioned, when helping out in emergencies ended up duplicating efforts with other agencies, and sometimes at the expense of other duties/causes. This created a great deal of confusion both within the agencies themselves and also the public at large. Hence Emergency Management Australia was born.

It is indeed very comforting knowing that a lot of people from different backgrounds all band together to help each other out during emergencies, not only because they are paid or unpaid but because they genuinely want to help the community. It is this mindset which we firmly need to instil on the X and Y generations since the average age of emergency volunteers is in the 50’s.

Stay safe on the long weekend.

Hey Ben! I have done the EM course too. In VIC its a whole weekend course & does exactly what you described. awesome!! Mine was done some time ago, but once you do it, it makes things soooo much clearer re: support vs lead agency.

Hey Ben, just wondering if they run this course in QLD... obviously every state does it differently - but I like the fact that you from Red Cross in NSW, and Ruby from SES in VIC, Salvation Army etc can all attend the same course... :D
