Wow, that's a lot of T's in the title...
Argh, it’s been so long since my last blog. Things have been so busy with work and catching up with friends from foreign lands. Nevertheless, Red Cross calls and on the 27Th of June I attended the Save-A-Mate (SAM) train-the-trainer course. Bit of a mouthful but was essentially a training course for SAM volunteers who want to progress onto the next stage of SAM involvement by facilitating new groups. SAM is involved with harm minimisation, not drug abstinence as well know being lectured to about not taking drugs will only encourage people to take them, if not for anything else other then rebellion. In short, teaching others about drug awareness. These groups include other SAM volunteers, and potentially school groups, drug rehab patients and in prisons... eeekkkkk!!!!!
The day was spent going over Alcohol and Other Drugs revision information, looking at different teaching methods, and other bits and bobs associated with learning how to teach. It was a great day to learn how it’s done but to be honest I wasn’t really convinced I wanted to go down that path in life. Engineering is a lot different than teaching kids about drugs after-all. Well not until I had an enlightening conversation with a friend over Sunday lunch.
We figured that potentially career changing decisions like this is worth the risk of success or failure. Besides, what’s life without a bit of risk eh?
So now I’m going to get even more involved with humanitarian work with trying my hand at facilitating drug harm minimisation. Firstly I’ll be involved as an observer and then move onto taking my own classes, with my first being in only a couple of weeks. Wish me luck.
