Hey there climate changers,
This week has been filled with a multitude of tasks associated with getting the Extreme Weather Heroes off the ground and further Red Cross volunteering.
In conjunction with the Extreme Weather Heroes and the NOVA radio stations in Sydney, Brisbane and Canberra we made a few Community Service Announcements that go to air this week. I was involved in making one for the Red Cross at the Nova 96.9 studio in Pyrmont.
This being the first time I’ve ever done anything like this it was an interesting experience to say the least. Trying to do a semi-serious announcement whilst having jokes with the guys up in the Brisbane office was a challenge.
The script was based off the blurb I wrote for the Extreme Weather Heroes website so was easy to come up with although for some reason I included a parting comment about “wearing my undies on the outside” too. I must admit though it was a lot of fun but like most people hearing my own voice on the radio is a little strange. So will this be the start of a new career in radio??? Well, probably not ;-p
I also attended an Australia Day citizenship ceremony in Bondi Junction as a first aider. There were about 50 new citizens hailing from several European countries who now call Australia home.
Being Australia Day I thought it was rather poignant for those new to Australia to become citizens on this day although I later learnt this wasn’t any bigger then their regular monthly ceremonies :-(.
There was the ubiquitous Waltzing Matilda sung throughout the day and acknowledgement from the traditional owners. Of course there were the essential Lamingtons and stubbies of VB on hand for consumption after the ceremonial duties had taken place, not by us of course.
Florence, the other first aider and I did have a discussion as to the history of Lamingtons and whilst I’ve just learnt Lamingtons originate from Queensland, there’s also a strawberry version popular with our sheep-loving cousins across the Tasman. I’ve also tried the lemon variety and honestly they’re just not right. The original ones are just so much better…
I wrote a short article for the Red Cross NSW Personal Support Volunteer e-newsletter about the new partnership between Green Cross Australia, the Extreme Weather Heroes and Red Cross. The newsletter highlights inter-agency experiences as well as recent activations and exercises of the Personal Support teams, of which we had a few including meeting passengers of the evacuation flight from Mumbai last November. The newsletter goes to all Personal Support volunteers in NSW hence spreading the good word of the Green Cross to a much wider audience.
Well that’s about it for this week. Tune in next week for more on Red Cross’ involvement with the other Emergency Services agencies when the going gets tough.
