The highlight of the week was being on the new Red Cross Australasian Interagency Incident Management System (AIIMS) training course. Bit of a mouthful but the course aims to increase cooperation between emergency services agencies (Red Cross, RFS, SES, DOCs, Police etc.) during times of disaster. The AIIMS course is actually based off the American system from their experiences in bushfires over the past decades. The course students were predominately Red Cross staff with only a few volunteers. It outlines the structure on how the agencies work together – basically who does what and where. Overall it was great course as it really puts into perspective the cooperation required between various agencies during times of emergencies and the very clinical nature (militaristic even) they must be managed.
I was also interviewed by Melbourne’s Student Youth Network (SYN) radio. SYN is a student-run voluntary radio station that caters for university students. Broadcast throughout the Melbourne area SYN is a premier volunteer run radio station that also trains media students in the ways of the wireless. The interview focussed on what I volunteer in and more importantly, and relevant to most people, how I schedule it in with full time work... which is sometimes quite difficult but well worth it in the end.
I was also a first aid volunteer at Future Music Festival at Randwick Racecourse which was a combined effort between Red Cross and Unimed, another first aid volunteer organisation.
It was awesome to work in that environment under those conditions. We were based at the FanKlub tent and actually had it pretty easy compared to the other teams who were flat out most of the time.
It was different to my regular duties at the other music festivals where I’m in a SAM role. We did have the usual blisters, cuts, twisted ankles and drunks etc., as well as other cases common at festivals ;-)
We did have a great debrief with a few others at the local café which was a fantastic way to end a day. Ice chocolate and cake at midnight, yuuuuuummmmmm…
All in all it was great first aid duty, a little long at nearly 14 hours but definitely worth it nonetheless. Oh and the free entry was a great incentive too ;-p
