Red Cross has a long history supporting the ANZAC’s dating back to World War 1.
Historically on ANZAC day the Red Cross serves refreshments to the diggers at the end of their march in Hyde Park near the ANZAC memorial. This is the first time I’ve attended as a volunteer and involved in serving drinks and bickies, whilst previously I attended as a marcher with high school cadets and the marching band, and then as a spectator.
As Red Cross has such a long tradition there was a lot more to then just handing out the odd cup of tea or coffee and a few Arnotts. The diggers do like to share a few stories of old times and we do like to have a chat. I think it’s just a little way we can say "Thank You" and show our appreciation for what they’ve done for us.
The guys and girls who volunteered were both staffers from Red Cross and also volunteers. What was really cool was that there were about 6 members from my first Aid team, a few members from my Personal Support team and even some from the Save-A-Mate team as well. A fantastic turnout I thought. A lot of familiar faces which was great!!!
Whilst the drinks and bickies were free we did get a few bucks in the donation tins and were very grateful.
I'll also put up some photos in my FlickR page soon as well showing all the happy faces and just how jam packed our tent was.
Have fun out there.
