May 29th - well, what an incredible day! The Heroes and I received formal invitations from the Australian Governor-General, Quentin Bryce, to attend a special reception at Government House.
So, off I went to Canberra. Ruby and I were given the opportunity to attend the 10th National Business Leaders Forum on Sustainable Development held at Parliament House in Canberra, to sit in on a discussion lead by Mara from Green Cross on rebuilding green after disasters. The forum was attended by prominent members of the business community who understand the important role of business in the fight against climate change. The keynote speech was delivered by Peter Garrett, Minister for Environment, Heritage and the Arts.
After the Forum, Ruby, Mara and I were met by the rest of the Heroes - first time together since January! We went on a brief tour of Parliament House and were lucky enough to sit in on a Senate Committee Hearing on climate change, which was as interesting as it was frustrating (some people ask some stupid questions). Anyway, then we had to head to Government House for the reception with the Governor General.
We were met there by Liz, the newest Hero and were introduced to the Governor-General and her husband, Michael (who is a very funny man). She thanked us all for our contribution to our communities and stressed the importance of the emergency services and the role of volunteers in the face of our changing climate. Mr Bryce told me a few stories about his time in the Brisbane SES and showed us around the house. And I had a conversation with Peter Garrett about all the new recruits from the recent intake! He was very impressed.
It was a real buzz.
But then it was time to go back to real life. Actually, that’s such a lie – I went back to a penthouse on the Gold Coast with some friends to spend the weekend checking out the Blues on Broadbeach music festival.
I’m a very lucky person.
