With all the recent hobnobbing with politicians and rocking out at festivals, its probably necessary to talk about what we actually do as SES volunteers - and that's training. Lots of training.
Since completing the Participate in a Rescue Operation course, there have been few streams of training going on at Western group.
The new recruits have been completing induction, measuring up for their spunky new outfits, and learning how to use the radio systems.
Another part of the group has been undertaking a leadership course - I spent a night at training covered in fake blood, pretending to be a casualty who needed rescuing from a building that exploded. (The guy at the Subway I went to after training seemed a bit shocked when he saw my hands a forearms covered in 'blood'.)
The rest of the group (including my self) has been doing a bunch of different stuff. We learnt some navigation techniques such as using compasses, GPS and how to take a bearing. We spent a night learning about urban rescue techniques (good to know when fighting zombies), getting aquainted with the floodboat and most recently, a visit to the water police.
So I managed to forget my camera that night, but we were shown around the water police headquarters in Whyte Island, out in the Port of Brisbane. We learnt about the day-to-day activities of the water police and got taken onto the new boat they use for extended patrols. It's huuuugge! The kitchen on the boat was nicer than the kitchen in my house!
While this boat was really impressive, I was more stoked to see a really inquisitive dolphin hanging around the back of the boat, just checking us out and scratching its back on some rope hanging in the water. Sooo cool!
I was also lucky enough to get on the Risk Management course a couple of Saturdays ago. This means I can now participate in the high risk courses, such as height safety, floodboat operations and chainsaws. Yes, that's right, chainsaws - I'll soon be well equipped to fight off zombies.
We've got some interesting training activities coming up at group, but more on that later.
Bye!
