I'm back in the game! Well, sort of...
After the sleepover from hell for the last two weeks, I now have a house and three lovely housemates (who are as attractive as they are awesome) so I can start my new life as an Extreme Weather Hero!
For those who don't already know, the Extreme Weather Heroes project is an initiative of Green Cross Australia, a super cool environmental NGO that rocks my socks off. EWH aims to inspire more young people to volunteer with our emergency services (SES, Red Cross, Rural Fire Brigades) to help mitigate the effects that climate change has on our communities.
In other words:
Climate Change = more extreme weather events = the need for more extreme weather heroes!!!
The way we want to inspire all you young folk is by telling our stories through these blogs and connecting with you through Facebook. We'll be sharing photos and videos, talking about climate change and how it affects us all, and basically try to show how awesome it is to be a part of an emergency service (chainsaws, people, chainsaws).
Hopefully, this will give you all more of idea of what's involved when you decide volunteer and make the whole process more accessible. I also want to show everyone how much you can learn from getting involved - not just chainsaws, but really practical skills like First Aid.
My next blog will explain the induction process for the SES and give a run down of what I've been doing these past few months as a newby.
But for now, I'm already being called Cyclone Ayla by some, Extreme Weather Binty by others, and Extreme Corporate Ayla from 8 to 6 on Fridays when I rock out in corporate wear at an office in Brisbane city. (Note: rocking out actually means fun with swivel chairs and fighting the fax machine).
And if someone has any suggestions for a suave catchphrase I can use to end my blogs, let me know... The best I could do was "SES? SE Yes!
See ya!
