Land Search course

This course was really fun (and remarkably relaxing!). One of the functions of the SES is to provide agency support to the police, often with conducting land searches. This could be for a missing person or forensic evidence.

So, one beautiful Saturday morning, a group of eager SES volunteers headed out to Toohey Forest Park to learn how to be effective land searchers. Woo!

Our classroom was out in the bush, which was very lovely indeed. Over the day we learned about :

  • the obligatory safety aspect - kinda boring but always necessary. Also, hydration!
  • search conduct - such as reconnaissance teams and fast action search teams
  • search team composition – callers, boundary markers, First aiders
  • land search formations - this depends on what you’re looking for – is it a person? A weapon? A piece of clothing? There are track sweeps, single file searches and parallel sweeps to name a few.
  • Observation techniques – use all of your senses (except maybe taste...)

We got to tramp around the bush looking for hidden objects, like a big treasure hunt. And the catering by Southern group was exceptional.

Basically, the day was like a bright orange picnic. Thanks very much!
