First Aid

Extreme Ayla is now First Aid qualified. Woohoo!

The Queensland Ambulance Service runs the Apply First Aid course (free for SES vollies!) which a bunch of us did one shiny Saturday.

The six-hour course covered...

  • CPR
  • Respiratory emergencies - asthma, choking, anaphylaxis, hyperventilation
  • Cardiac emergencies - heart attack, angina
  • Bleeding and shock
  • Fractures and dislocations
  • Poisons, bites and stings

 ... among other things.

A really fun exercise we did was bandaging wounds. We were shown different wounds on a slideshow and we had to bandage up our partner using a bag of random stuff our instructor had bought along. The point was that as first aiders, we're probably not going to have a first aid kit with us when we need it. So, improvise!

I had a head wound...

...but was severely unimpressed with Ben's sock/belt combo. Thanks Ben.

Keira bandaging Mel's leg wound. Also, my handiwork on Ben.

I had really fun day.

Ideally, I'd like to never have to use these new skills. However, I almost had to that very same night at my housewarming party, when a particularly drunk friend of mine kept swandiving down our back steps. Ah, alcohol, the first aiders worst nightmare. But it all ended well, the only casualty was his dignity.

And if he had done any damage, I knew I could've helped him... Which was a good feeling.

Love the belt/sock combo. Hope it was a clean one ;-p
