Ayla spent her youth on the Gold Coast, but moved to Brisbane at 17 to pursue a social life, with occasional study.
While she has completed two university degrees and generally considers herself an intelligent person, it wasn't until age 22 that she realised The Kink's song 'Lola' was about a man.
Ayla is pretty new to the SES. Fear prompted her to begin volunteering with the QLD SES last year, when she realised how underprepared she was for the zombie invasion she believes in inevitable. So far, her short time with the SES has taught her some amazing knot tying techniques and increased her skill in the ancient art of dad jokes.
In her spare time, Ayla pens haiku, appreciates a cheap red wine and is excited about being an Extreme Weather Hero!

Age: 22
State: QLD
Chosen volunteer organisation
State Emergency Services (SES)
Motivation for joining
I joined the SES for a number of reasons. Primarily, I thought it would be a really positive and practical way to help my community. I also thought it was a good opportunity for me to learn some amazing skills and knowledge so I would feel more capable, confident and useful in an emergency situation. Finally, I think that it is important for the community to prepare for the impacts of climate change now, however, it is the responsibility of the individual to be proactive in making a difference. So I chose to volunteer with the SES.
‘Real’ job
I’m a barista in two cafés in Brisbane, however I’ve recently graduated from a Business Management and Arts double degree, so now I’m searching for meaning and purpose in this so-called ‘real world’ I’ve heard so much about.
Thoughts on climate change and extreme weather
Climate change is not an issue that anyone can ignore – it effects everyone. It demands a response from all members of the community at every level, from government, business, communities and most importantly, from the individual.
More severe weather is an obvious effect of climate change. It is important that communities are well-prepared to cope with the increase in extreme weather conditions. Joining an emergence service like the SES is a hands-on and easy way for members of the community to help out.
Likes
In my spare time, I enjoy such respectful pursuits as rock climbing, scuba diving, attempting to surf, reading and learning. Especially learning what we can all do in our everyday lives to live more sustainably. Changing our consumptions patterns to buy locally, reducing our reliance on cars, and thinking carefully about what we eat are small changes that can have a big impact.
Dislikes
Cold weather, reduction targets of 5%, the widespread attitude around climate change issues that sounds a little like ‘its not my problem’ or ‘one person won’t make a difference’ and thinking about things that I dislike.
Aspirations
I aspire to inspire change – to myself, to others and to the community. I would love to work for an environmental organisation like Green Cross, which spend everyday working to inspire positive change.
Proudest moment
Graduating from University after 5 years. Also, being chosen as one of the Extreme Weather Heroes.
Biggest learning experience
Having the opportunity to study abroad was my biggest learning experience. I lived in Singapore and travelled throughout South East Asia, as well as Sri Lanka and Japan. I was fortunate to meet so many amazing people from all over the world, experience different cultures and customs, eat amazing food and see beautiful places. I think that forcing yourself out of your comfort zone is an amazing way to learn.
