A word from the Australian Red Cross about the Chilean Earthquake

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is a lead player in responding to disasters wherever they occur around the globe. Australian Red Cross, through its links with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), plays a major role in that response.

Council of Australian Governments (COAG) addressing National Disaster preparedness

The Council of Australian Governments (COAG) which held its 28th meeting on 7 December 2009 in Brisbane discussed many issues over health reform, training and also very importantly National Disaster Resilience. COAG recognised not only the roles of government, at the national, state and local levels had in disaster preparedness, but also big business, individuals and volunteer organisations. Coupled with the recent news article from Queensland's Courier Mail about our complacency regarding emergency preparedness it highlights the need for everyone to develop their own disaster kit. The Red Cross is rolling out diasaster-kit books that highlights how one can prepare and what one should have in their own kit, both stay at home and evacuation kits. I hope this helps some.

Suicide is painless

"Suicide is painless". That's an interesting title for the MASH theme song...
Well it's been a while since my last bit of volunteering and a while since my last blog.
Last Thursday I participated in a Suicide Prevention Workshop run by LifeForce, which is part of Wesley Mission. OK that's a pretty tenuous link between MASH and the workshop but I love MASH and I figured the titles sort of match.

The NSW north coast being smashed...again

The NSW mid-north coast is really not having much luck this year with its second major flood is as many months. This time it is far, far worse than the previous as the areas affected is much greater extending from Coffs Harbour to just shy of the Queensland border. Much of the Pacific Highway, the major arterial road on the east coast was cut for a significant length with some 200kms impassable with the only other route north to south being the New England Highway. In all there were about three evacuation centres opened along the coast with many towns completely flooded and hence cut off. In all there were many thousands of people affected.

World Red Cross Day

Friday 8 May 2009 was World Red Cross Day, and the birthday of Red Cross’s founder Henry Dunant. Dunant, a Swiss banker, witnessed the horrifying aftermath of the Battle of Solferino in June 1859 and subsequently formed the Red Cross in order to alleviate the suffering of the dead, dieing and injured. Dunant wrote the book “A Memory of Solferino” which describes in stark detail the events that lead to the creation of the Red Cross.
